Between Sparx Hockey’s 16 Grinding Rings, you may notice that there are two different hollow profiles that are offered, the Traditional Radius Ring and the FIRE Ring. Traditional Radius Ring is the tried and true, original hollow profile still used by most professional and amateur players around the world. The Sparx FIRE ring is a unique experience that you may not have tried yet but could provide the benefits and the edge you’re looking for.
Sparx Hockey reimagined and optimized a flat bottom profile that provides improved glide while still maintaining the desired bite. FIRE ring provides you both bite and glide without the tradeoffs.
Each FIRE ring profile still uses the same radius on the edges as its traditional Radius Ring partner, but we’ve truncated the hollow to help the player sit on top of the ice meaning there’s less sinking/drag and therefore increasing glide. Standing on a flat bottom profile, you almost don’t feel your edges but when you get up on your edges in a turn, you’ll have the desired bite you want.
The grip you receive from a FIRE ring is equal to its Radius Ring counterpart and the glide you’ll receive, will feel like an equivalent of 3/16” increase in Radius of Hollow. If you skate on ½” FIRE Ring, you’ll feel the grip of ½" and the glide of 11/16”, giving you the grip you need and an increase in glide. Reference the chart below for more info on the Radius Ring and FIRE Ring and where they fall on the Grip/Glide scale.
The Sparx Hockey FIRE Ring profile is more forgiving than that of other flat bottom hollows on the market equaling a more confident feeling every time you step onto the ice. Whether you choose the Traditional Radius Ring or FIRE Ring, you know you’ll have an edge you can trust with the Sparx Skate Sharpener.
